I spent four years working with Google as the video producer for the Novice Internet Users research team, which studied the lives and priorities of people who are coming online for the first time. I filmed in Nigeria, Indonesia, Brazil, and Mexico with dozens of participants as well as local culture experts and technology experts.
After filming in the field, I worked with UX researchers, ethnographers, statisticians, and software engineers to comb through hundreds of hours of interviews and demographic data to conceptualize thoughtful and engaging stories to teach people how to make better digital experiences for people with limited exposure to the internet. I wrote, produced, filmed, and edited over thirty videos on a wide range of topics such as literacy, iconography, entrepreneurship, and more.
Below is trailer as well as stills from my work. Some of the faces and details have been hidden to protect privacy.
This work was done as part of the broader Next Billion Users Team at Google. If you would like to know more about their work, you can listen to this 99% Invisible episode linked below which goes much more in-depth.
